The Cheapest Way to Heat a Room

Space heaters have a reputation for running up the electric bill, and used badly they do. Used well — to heat the one room you're in while the rest of the house sits cooler — they're the cheapest comfort in the house. Here's the arithmetic, plus the three tricks that beat any heater: warm the person, fix the dry air, and set the thermostat back.

The arithmetic

Electric resistance heat is simple to price: a 1,500W heater running flat out uses 1.5 kWh per hour. At the US-average 16¢/kWh, that's about 24¢ an hour, $1.45 for a six-hour evening, or roughly $43 a month if it ran six hours every day at full tilt. In practice a heater with a thermostat cycles once the room is warm — typically 50–70% duty — so the real number is closer to $25–30 a month for an evening heater. The type of plug-in heater doesn't change that number. Ceramic, oil-filled, infrared, "energy-saving" — 1,500 watts is 1,500 watts, and all of it becomes heat. What changes the bill is (1) how many watts you run, (2) for how many hours, and (3) whether you use the heater to lower the thermostat for the rest of the house.

Zone heating: the whole trick

A central furnace heats every room to the same temperature whether or not anyone's in them. Zone heating means setting the furnace lower — say 62–64°F — and using a space heater to bring the one room you occupy up to 70°F. You pay 1,500 watts for one warm room instead of paying the furnace to warm eight of them.

  • It works when you spend most of your time in one or two rooms, the rest of the house can sit cooler, and the heater replaces furnace runtime rather than adding to it.
  • It fails when you run three or four space heaters to keep the whole house warm — resistance electric is almost always more expensive per BTU than gas, oil, or a heat pump, so heating the whole house with plug-ins is the most expensive option there is.
  • Do it right: a heater with a real thermostat in degrees (so it cycles instead of running flat out), the furnace set back by at least 4–6°F, and a timer so the heater isn't warming an empty room.

Each degree you lower the whole-house thermostat for eight hours saves roughly 1% on heating; a 6°F setback while you zone-heat one room is a real number on the bill, and it's where a space heater earns its keep.

Warm the person, not the room

Heating air so it can heat you is the least direct route. A heated mattress pad, blanket, or throw heats you. The power numbers aren't close: heated bedding on a low-to-medium setting draws a small fraction of what a space heater does, and it lets you drop the bedroom to 60°F overnight without noticing.

  • Overnight: a heated mattress pad under the fitted sheet, pre-heated 15 minutes before bed and dropped to low or auto-off. This is the single biggest winter-bill win most households skip.
  • On the couch or at a desk: a heated throw over your lap does what an under-desk heater does for pennies, without a hot appliance by your feet.
  • Layers and slippers are free. A warm floor (rug over hard floor) changes how warm a room feels more than a degree on the thermostat.

Humidity: the comfort lever nobody uses

Furnace-heated winter air is dry — 15–25% relative humidity is common — and dry air feels colder than humid air at the same temperature because it evaporates moisture from your skin faster. Bringing a bedroom or living room back to 40% RH makes 66–68°F feel like 70°F. A humidifier draws a tiny fraction of a heater's power, so this is one of the cheapest comfort upgrades there is.

  • Target 35–45% RH; a $10 hygrometer tells you where you are. Over 50% in winter and you get condensation on windows.

  • Clean it weekly. A dirty humidifier undoes the benefit.

Thermostat setbacks

  • Set the house back 7–10°F for the eight hours you're asleep or away — that's the common guideline for meaningful savings with a furnace or boiler. Pair the night setback with heated bedding and you won't feel it.
  • A programmable or smart thermostat makes this automatic; setbacks that depend on remembering don't happen.
  • Heat-pump homes are different: large setbacks can trigger expensive auxiliary strip heat on recovery. Small setbacks (2–3°F) or none are usually the better move — check your system.
The cheapest evening in a cold house: furnace at 63°F, one 1,500W heater with a thermostat holding 70°F in the living room, a humidifier at 40%, a heated throw on the couch — then a heated mattress pad and a 60°F bedroom overnight. Every piece of that costs less to run than the furnace it replaces.

What doesn't work

  • "Energy-saving" heaters. A plug-in heater with a thermostat and an ECO mode saves energy by cycling; no plug-in heater makes more heat per watt than another. Claims about "heating 1,000 square feet for pennies" describe supplemental heat in a room the furnace is already warming.
  • Heating the whole house with space heaters is more expensive than almost any central system. Zone, don't replace.
  • Closing vents in unused rooms on a forced-air system can unbalance it and doesn't save much; setting the thermostat back does.
  • Running the oven for heat — no.

When a space heater isn't the answer

If a room is always cold, the cheapest long-term fix is usually not a heater: weatherstripping, window film or insulated shades, sealing around outlets on exterior walls, and attic insulation pay back faster than any appliance. If a room needs more than ~1,500 watts to be comfortable (run it through the sizing tool), a mini-split heat pump delivers two to three units of heat per unit of electricity and is the efficient answer for a permanently under-heated space. Space heaters are for the rooms in between — cold enough to bother you, not cold enough to renovate.
