Ameriwood Home Carson 70" Fireplace TV Stand

The verdict

The Carson is the sensible fireplace-TV-stand: a 70-inch console with open shelves and closed cabinets for components, a center-mounted 23-inch fireplace insert that runs flame with or without heat, and the sort of laminated-particleboard build you'd expect at the price. The insert is replaceable, which matters for a heater that will see years of use. Heat is supplemental — the insert is rated for about 400 square feet — and the flame is pleasant rather than remarkable. As a single purchase that organizes the living room and warms the couch, it's hard to beat.

Typical price: ~$340 (typical street price — current price shown on Amazon)

What we like

  • +One piece of furniture: TV console for screens up to 70 in, storage, and a fireplace
  • +Replaceable 23-in electric fireplace insert with flame-only and flame-plus-heat modes
  • +Heats roughly 400 sq ft of supplemental space; flame runs year-round
  • +Two open shelves and two cabinets for media gear
  • +Good value for a fireplace and a TV stand combined

What to know

  • Laminated particleboard — sturdy enough, but not hardwood; assembly takes an afternoon
  • Flame effect is basic compared with the dedicated linear units
  • Heater vents below the TV; respect the TV weight limit and the clearance in the manual
  • Heavy to move once built

Full review

A fireplace TV stand is a compromise product by design — it's furniture first, heater second, fireplace third — and the Carson is the best version of the compromise we've found at a mainstream price. The console is wide enough for a 65- or 70-inch TV, the storage is genuinely useful (two open shelves for a soundbar and console, two doors for the stuff you don't want to see), and the center fireplace gives the wall a focal point below the screen.

The 23-inch insert is the standard unit Ameriwood uses across its fireplace furniture, which has a practical upside: it's replaceable. Fan-forced heaters are the part that wears out, and being able to swap the insert rather than the console matters for a piece you'll keep for years. The heat is supplemental — rated for about 400 square feet — and it warms the couch area in front of it nicely. The flame effect is a simple LED-and-log arrangement; it looks fine from the sofa and a little basic up close.

Build and install are what you'd expect from flat-pack furniture: an afternoon with the included hardware, a second person for flipping it upright, and a level floor. Plug the insert straight into a wall outlet, check the TV weight limit before you mount anything, and keep the manual's clearance above the heater vent. If you'd rather have a better fireplace and buy a TV stand separately, the R.W.FLAME linear unit is the answer; if you want one box that does both jobs adequately, this is it.

Best for: Living rooms and family rooms that need a TV console anyway and want a fireplace and some warmth without a separate wall unit.
