Beautyrest Microlight Plush Heated Blanket (Queen) Review
The step-up heated blanket: thick microlight plush, 20 heat levels per side, a 1-hour preheat, a 1–10 hour auto-off you choose, and low-EMF wiring — UL certified with a 5-year warranty.

The verdict
Sunbeam's Royal Ultra is the sensible heated blanket; Beautyrest's plush is the nicer one. The fabric is a heavier, denser microlight plush that reads as a real winter blanket rather than a fleece with wires in it, and the controllers have twice the resolution — 20 levels each, one per side on the queen — plus a one-hour preheat that gets the bed warm before you get in and an auto-off you can set anywhere from 1 to 10 hours. Beautyrest's 'Secure Comfort' wiring is designed to keep electromagnetic fields near zero, it's UL certified, machine washable, and carries a 5-year warranty. It costs more than the Sunbeam, and it's a bed blanket first — heavy enough that it's less of a couch throw.

What we like
- +Thick, genuinely soft microlight plush — pleasant unplugged, warm without the heat on
- +20 heat levels per controller, dual controllers on the queen, 1-hour preheat
- +Selectable 1–10 hour auto shut-off; works with smart plugs and outlet timers
- +Low-EMF flexible wiring (Secure Comfort), UL certified, OEKO-TEX certified fabric
- +Machine washable; 5-year limited warranty
What to know
- −Pricier than the Sunbeam Royal Ultra for the same basic job
- −Heavier (about 9 lb) and warmer fabric — a bed blanket more than a sofa throw
- −Heats to a gentle 85–105°F range; if you want a hot blanket, this isn't it
- −Not for infants or anyone who can't operate the controls themselves
Full review
Most heated blankets are a thin fleece with a heating grid inside; you buy them for the heat, not the blanket. The Beautyrest is the exception in the mainstream price range: the microlight plush is thick and dense enough that it earns its place on the bed with the power off, and the flexible wires disappear into the pile. At about nine pounds for a queen it has real weight to it, which most people find cozy and a few will find warm even unplugged. That's the trade against the lighter Sunbeam — nicer to sleep under, less handy to drag to the couch.
The controllers are where it pulls ahead. Twenty levels per side is fine enough that a couple can each find exactly the setting that holds all night, rather than bouncing between 'too much' and 'not quite.' The one-hour preheat does the thing you actually want from a heated blanket — a warm bed when you get into it — and then drops to your level. Auto-off is selectable from 1 to 10 hours, so a chronic 'fall asleep with it on high' habit is safe, and the controller is happy on a smart plug or an outlet timer if you'd rather schedule it. Beautyrest's Secure Comfort wiring is engineered to keep EMF near zero; whatever you make of that, it's UL certified and the company touts a long recall-free record.
Care is machine wash cold and gentle with the controllers unplugged, and the 5-year warranty covers the wiring. The usual electric-bedding rules apply: don't tuck it under the mattress, don't fold it while it's running, don't sleep on top of it, and don't use it for infants or anyone who can't manage the controls. If you want the cheapest good heated blanket, the Sunbeam is still the value pick; if you want the one that feels like a proper blanket and gives each side of the bed fine control, spend the extra.
Best for: Cold sleepers who want the plushest mainstream heated blanket, fine per-side control, and a preheat button.
