Vornado Evap40 Evaporative Humidifier Review
A 4-gallon evaporative console rated for up to 1,000 sq ft — the largest single-room coverage of any humidifier we carry — with an adjustable humidistat and Vornado's vortex circulation to push moisture across an open floor plan.

The verdict
Every humidifier in this guide until now tops out around 750 sq ft; the Evap40 is built for the room none of them can handle. It's a straightforward evaporative design — a fan pulls air through a pair of wet wicks, so tap water is fine and there's no white mineral dust — scaled up to a 4-gallon dual-tank capacity and paired with Vornado's vortex circulation to push the moisture through an open living room or a finished basement instead of just the unit's immediate corner. An adjustable humidistat handles automatic shutoff once the room hits your target, and a 5-year warranty is the longest of any humidifier here. What it doesn't have is a digital sensor, an app, or a display — this is a large, honest console, not a smart one.

What we like
- +Largest coverage in the category — 4-gallon dual-tank capacity rated for up to 1,000 sq ft, well beyond the Levoit LV600S's 750 sq ft
- +Evaporative design: tap water is fine, no white mineral dust, and output self-limits as the room approaches target humidity
- +Adjustable humidistat with automatic shutoff once the set humidity is reached
- +Vornado's vortex air circulation spreads moisture through the whole room instead of pooling it near the unit
- +5-year warranty — longest of any humidifier in this guide
What to know
- −No digital display, app, or voice control — a dial humidistat only, unlike the Levoit Superior Studio Smart's sensor and app
- −Largest and heaviest humidifier we carry — a console footprint, not a bedside unit
- −Replacement wicks are a recurring cost, same as the Honeywell HCM350
- −Three speed settings only; coarser control than a digital sensor's fine auto-hold
Full review
The honest tradeoff between evaporative and ultrasonic humidifiers runs through this whole guide: ultrasonics like the Levoit units are quiet and precise but need distilled water to avoid white dust, while evaporative units like the Honeywell HCM350 run on tap water and can't be over-humidified, at the cost of a fan you can hear and a wick filter you replace. The Evap40 takes the evaporative side of that trade and scales it up — a 4-gallon dual-tank design rated for up to 1,000 sq ft, nearly double the Levoit LV600S's 750 sq ft and far beyond the Honeywell's roughly 500 sq ft bedroom rating. For an open living room, a finished basement, or any space where the bedroom-sized units in this guide run out of capacity, this is the one built for it.
Vornado's vortex circulation is the same idea behind the MVH space heater: instead of just blowing moist air out the front, the fan sets up a continuous air movement pattern that carries the humidity around the whole room rather than letting it pool near the unit. Paired with the adjustable humidistat — set your target, and the Evap40 shuts off automatically once the room gets there — it's a genuinely hands-off way to hold a large space at a comfortable humidity, using plain tap water and leaving no mineral dust on the furniture. The 5-year warranty, the longest of any humidifier we carry, says something about how long Vornado expects the mechanism to last.
What it doesn't do is compete on features with the Levoit Superior Studio Smart or the LV600S: there's no digital sensor, no app, no voice control, just a dial for speed and a dial for target humidity. It's also the biggest, heaviest humidifier in this guide, which is the honest cost of 1,000 sq ft of coverage. If the room is a bedroom or a home office, the Levoit or Honeywell units are a better fit and cost less; if the space is a great room or an open floor plan that's been drying out every humidifier you've tried, the Evap40's extra tank capacity and coverage are the reason to spend more. Budget for replacement wicks every season or two, same as any evaporative design.
Best for: Open living rooms, large bedrooms, and finished basements where a bedroom-sized humidifier can't keep up — evaporative, tap-water convenience at a bigger scale.
