First, the rule that makes this simple
A standard 120V household outlet is limited to 15 amps, and heater makers cap their products at 12.5 amps — 1,500 watts — to leave margin. That's about 5,100 BTU per hour, and it's the ceiling for every plug-in heater sold in the US, regardless of type, price, or the number on the box. Electric resistance heat is also 100% efficient at the outlet: 1,500 watts in, 1,500 watts of heat out. So no plug-in heater is "more efficient" than another in the engineering sense.
What differs is delivery: whether the heat is pushed into the air with a fan, radiated directly onto you and the furniture, or released slowly from a warm mass. Delivery changes how fast you feel warm, how evenly the room heats, how much noise you live with, and how safe the thing is to touch. Pick the type for the room, then pick the best unit of that type.
Ceramic (fan-forced PTC)
A PTC ceramic element heats up, a fan blows air across it and out the grille. It's the most common type, from $30 boxes to $70 smart units with oscillation.
- ▸Good at: fast warmth in a small zone — a desk, a bathroom floor, the foot of a bed — in a minute or two. Compact and cheap. Oscillating versions cover a seating area.
- ▸Bad at: silence (there's always a fan), and whole-room evenness — the warm stream pools where it's pointed.
- ▸Belongs in: offices, bathrooms, dorms, small bedrooms for pre-bed warm-up. Look for a digital thermostat, a tip-over switch, and a timer. Our pick: the Dreo Atom One.
Oil-filled radiator
An element heats a sealed reservoir of diathermic oil, the oil heats steel fins, and the fins warm the room by convection and gentle radiation. No fan, no moving parts.
- ▸Good at: silent, steady, all-night heat. The thermal mass keeps radiating after the thermostat clicks off, so temperature stays even instead of sawtoothing. No glowing element.
- ▸Bad at: speed — 15–20 minutes before you feel it. Heavy (15–26 lb), and the fins are hot to the touch on most models.
- ▸Belongs in: bedrooms, nurseries (with clearance), home offices where noise matters. Our pick: the De'Longhi Dragon Digital; budget: the Amazon Basics radiator.
Infrared (quartz / radiant)
Quartz tubes or similar elements emit infrared energy that warms whatever it lands on — you, the sofa, the floor — rather than the air in between. Cabinet-style units (Dr Infrared, Lifesmart, Duraflame) add a quiet fan and a thermostat so the radiant warmth is paired with gentle room heating.
- ▸Good at: making you feel warm immediately in drafty, tall, or glassy rooms where warm air would escape or rise away. Quiet blowers, cool-touch cabinets on the good ones.
- ▸Bad at: heating around corners — line of sight matters — and they're big. Plain radiant panels without a fan heat one spot.

Fan-forced / vortex circulators
Technically most ceramic heaters are fan-forced, but a distinct subclass — Vornado's vortex heaters are the best known — uses the fan to move the whole room's air in a continuous circulation pattern rather than blasting a hot stream.
- ▸Good at: evening out a whole room — no hot pocket, no cold corner, smaller temperature swings. Quiet for a fan heater.
- ▸Bad at: the instant "warm on my shins" feeling; you heat the room, not yourself.
- ▸Belongs in: living rooms, family rooms, large bedrooms. Our pick: the Vornado MVH.
Micathermic
A thin panel heater with elements sandwiched in mica sheets. It radiates (like infrared) and convects (like a radiator) without a fan, and it's light and slim — often wall-mountable.
- ▸Good at: silent, quick-ish heat in a slim package. Faster than oil-filled, lighter, wall-mount options.
- ▸Bad at: thermal mass — it cools as soon as it shuts off — and the panel surface runs hot. Fewer good models on the market than the other types.
- ▸Belongs in: bedrooms and offices where you want silence but not a heavy radiator. We don't currently have a micathermic pick we'd recommend over the oil-filled and infrared units above, but it's a legitimate category worth knowing.
What about electric fireplaces and "stoves"?

Beyond plug-in: when 1,500W isn't enough
If the sizing toolsays you need more than ~1,500 watts, you've left the plug-in category. A garage, shop, or large open room wants a 240V hardwired unit heater (5,000–6,000W) or a vented gas unit heater (30,000–50,000+ BTU) — see our garage & shop heaters. For a living space that's genuinely under-heated, a mini-split heat pump is the efficient long-term answer; no space heater is.
