The verdict

The DR-966 is the electric garage heater we'd install in a two-car garage: 6,000 watts on high (about 20,000 BTU — a step above the usual 5,000W units), a 3,000W low setting for maintaining temperature, an adjustable built-in thermostat, eight directional louvers, and a bracket that mounts to the ceiling or wall. It's hardwired to a dedicated 240V / 30A circuit, so plan on an electrician, but once it's up it disappears into a corner and just works. Heavier steel and a better fan than the budget units, for modestly more money.

The math on garage heat is unforgiving: a typical two-car garage is 400–500 square feet, and even insulated, it needs roughly 10 watts per square foot to hold a comfortable working temperature on a cold day. That's 4,000–5,000 watts — three times what any 120V plug-in can make — and on a really cold morning a little headroom is welcome. The DR-966's 6,000-watt high setting is that headroom, and it fits on the same 30A circuit as the 5,000W units. The 3,000W low setting is the other half of the appeal: you can hold 45–50°F overnight at half the draw and let the thermostat cycle.

Installed in a corner, angled down across the floor with the louvers, it takes an insulated two-car garage from the 30s to the mid-60s in roughly an hour, then cycles. The fan is loud (they all are), the steel is thicker than the Comfort Zone's, and the fit of the bracket and louvers is a notch better. The thermostat is on the unit, which is fine if you set it and forget it; if you'll be adjusting often, have the electrician add a line-voltage wall thermostat during the install.

The non-negotiables: a dedicated 240V / 30A circuit, hardwired by someone who knows what they're doing, mounted to joists or studs with the clearances in the manual. Solvent vapors, sawdust, and combustibles stay away from the intake and discharge. If you have a 240V outlet and want a plug-in unit instead, look at the King below; if you want the absolute cheapest permanent install, the Comfort Zone; if you heat the shop daily or it's uninsulated, the gas-fired Big Maxx.

Best for: Insulated two-car garages and workshops where a permanently mounted 240V heater on a 30A circuit is the plan.
